Customer identified a transformer with suspected leaks from all three LV bushing base flanges, and potentially from the porcelain interfaces.
Application Situation
Transformers require oil as they have to run arc-free. As oil was being lost, this would result in constantly having to keep the oil topped up as a critical component for the machinery. Although in bunds, there is also potential for environmental issues if leak persists.
Application Solution
Existing paint was removed from bolts and flange areas on either side of the defect and Emery paper was used on the porcelain bases to achieve surface keying to the best possible standard.
Belzona 1212 was mixed and applied to the joint/gasket areas, as well as to the nuts and bolt heads, incorporating Belzona Reinforcement Sheet where possible. In addition, moulds filled with Belzona 1212 were placed over the bolt and nut heads, which remained in place during curing.
As the repair area involved different substrates, a high adhesion solution was required. Belzona 7311 was mixed and applied to the porcelain/steel interfaces, again incorporating Reinforcement Sheet, and allowed to cure overnight.
The following day, all moulds were removed and any sharp areas carefully dressed back. To complete the system, the entire repair area will receive a final coat of Belzona 5831 LT, fully encapsulating the repair.
Belzona Benefits
Repairing the leaks saved on the cost of constantly replacing oil, and if transformer failed due to lack of oil, would have resulted in a very costly replacement.
